The challenge

Groundwater produced from Signal Hill’s Well No. 9 contained elevated color levels and dissolved solids that prevented the water from entering the city’s drinking water system without treatment. The City of Signal Hill needed a treatment solution capable of reducing color while maintaining mineral balance and meeting drinking water standards, while also accommodating variable well production and future system expansion.

Challenge met

Filanc delivered the design-build wellhead treatment facility and installed the systems needed to treat groundwater directly at the wellhead. The project included pumps, cartridge filtration and two nanofiltration treatment trains operating at high recovery rates to remove color and dissolved constituents.

Supporting systems include chemical feed equipment, clean-in-place systems, concentrate discharge tanks and a product water storage tank that stabilizes treated water before distribution. Filanc also constructed a metal building housing electrical and control equipment and installed an emergency generator to support continuous operation. These improvements allow the City of Signal Hill to treat groundwater locally while maintaining reliable drinking water service for the community.
